Screenings
Dear parents,
As stated in the Middletown Township Parent/Student handbook, children are screened for hearing and vision yearly. The nurse will also weigh and measure each child every year. Blood pressure screening is also part of this health assessment. Parents will be notified if there is a deviation from the norm in any of these screenings.
Classes will also be checked for head lice, if there is a report of a child with an infestation, or at the request of the teacher. The parent will be notified if their child is found to have live lice or nits.
These assessments are done by class level, with 2 to 3 children at a time, in the health office. They will be scheduled throughout October, November and December.
BMI (Body mass Index) will be calculated on all children in the first and fourth grades. A letter will be sent home to parents in September or October of the school year, allowing parents to opt out of BMI calculation and notification. Again, notification will be sent home if the child is found to be underweight, overweight or obese.
All children, ten years of age, will be assessed in January or February for scoliosis, which is a curvature of the spine. A letter will precede the screening and parents may opt out by signing the bottom of the form and returning it to school before the date of the test.
Please call the health office if you have further questions.
Thank you.
